City Mix > Istanbul

   PREV / NEXT

a project by Andrea Mi
in collaboration with Intooitiv

City Mix is a journey among the 'hot-spots' of contemporary electronic creativity. It is a journey among those cities that by nature and vocation have become artistic hotspots: the dynamic hubs of a map in constant expansion. In the ever-growing panorama of multi-media electronic techniques, some cities seem more capable of grasping, motivating and giving space to the productive energy that unites experimentation and high quality production.
The voyage had to begin in Florence, in whose underground new energies and projects are moving, capable of renewing the legacy of the pioneers Pankow and Alexander Robotnik.  Next it passes by Amsterdam and its kindred spirits, stops off with the rapid advances of Bucharest and Frankfurt in the east, moves onto the fervid activity of an ever-more global Barcelona, and returns south as always to a bewitching and absolutely up-to-date Istanbul.  The journey finishes in the city that has done more than any other to build the European electronic landscape: Berlin.... To watch the sky above and the music beneath.

City Mix > ISTANBUL

Having hit the headlines with the great success of the film Crossing the Bridge, the Istanbul music scene is revealing the artistic ferment that has been incubating for years in the cellars and clubs of the Turkish capital and is now ready to conquer an international audience.
Video artists who can rework their folklore in a Situationist register, musicians who breathe new life into their own audio roots by grounding them in electronic culture, and artists who are riding the digital wave are all playing their part in marking out Istanbul as one of the most productive centres devoted to languages of the future.

Dj Hugo Chavez & Vj Ahmedinejad: No Exotic, Gegen Die Bridge_ mixed media live
Dj Hugo Chavez & Vj Ahmedinejad make up a new multimedia project born between Tehran, Istanbul and Caracas. Their aim is to investigate cultural clichés and their effects on the global political and economic situation in a situationist re-use of mass pop culture. Their exploration focuses on a reading of the contemporary media landscape, on the role of advertising and on the power of the corporation, without neglecting paradigms like that of intellectual property. The enquiry unfolds through a deconstruction of 60's and 70's Turkish film, with the intention of subverting contemporary stereotypes, spun in an audio-visual kaleidoscope with explosive power. Their live performances employ 'cut-up' techniques to blend traditional music, experimental electronic sounds, and TV and B-movie samples. The resulting Dadaist show has already toured festivals and clubs throughout Europe, Asia and North America.

Mercan Dede _ dj set featuring Tanya Evenson
Mercan Dede and his alter ego DJ Arkin Allen, are at the cutting edge of the Turkish musical scene,  and have already appeared at festivals such as Montreal Jazz, World Roots in Holland and Rhythm Sticks in England. With projects like East Meets West, Montreal Tribal Trio and Womex he has already won over world music audiences in Germany, France and Spain. He has many collaborations to his name, with artists like Peter Murphy, Natacha Atlas and Omar Sosa. Mercan Dede has also composed music for Pina Bausch's production Istanbul, which was staged in 2003. At the moment he is involved in the dance project Orman Sehir (Jungle City).
Canadian dancer Tanya Evanson will accompany dj Arkın Allen on the stage, with her hypnotising, spiritual whirling performance, inspired from the sufi dance of the dervishes.
