a collaboration CPR - Centre for
Performance Research, Aberystwyth (Wales)
and Fondazione Pontedera Teatro

With a focus this year on Eastern voices, this Fabbrica Europa presentation represents an ongoing collaboration with CPR Wales Giving Voice project,
Giving Voice is an established international event which has the aim of advancing the appreciation and understanding of the voice in performance through practical research and a celebration of its many and varied manifestations throughout time and culture.

The vocalist Stepanida Borisova belongs to the Turkish people of Sakha who are living in Jakutia and who are rooted in the religion of shamanism.
She is an extraordinary and leading epic storyteller and singer of the ancient epos of the Sakha people, which accompany the shamanic rituals of 'feeding the spirits'. The vibrating singing of the Toyuk improvisation style allows a vast expressive range of different motifs to represent different characters, good and evil.
Borisova sings "ugadan kurduk" as a shaman. In Kamlania female shamans are considered more powerful than male shamans and whilst difficult to prove, it is believed that Stepanida's voice has healed people.

With a unified work with other artists of her country she has been very important in the further development of the Sakha culture. For this, she also is highly engaged in international projects. She has made many guest appearances in international theatre from such countries as, Mexico, USA, Finnland, Germany, Japan, Poland, Norway, Italy, France, the Czech Republic, Hongkong, Hungary, Great Britain and in the lands of the once USSR. In these countries she toured giving many concerts and has received international acclaim.
