The France-based Algerian choreographer Nacera Belaza has already built up a considerable career. Le Cri is a turning point. It earned her the prize for the choreographic revelation of 2008 awarded by the French professional critique's union for theater.
Nacera Belaza came to performance after studying literature and film, both of which inform her work.
Performed with her sister Dalila, Le Cri explores spirituality through minimal movement juxtaposed against a range of music including Maria Callas, Amy Winehouse and traditional instrumental music.
Repetitive and hypnotic, Nacera and Dalila Belaza's dance takes us out of time, stuns us to better carry us away, to better lift us up. Minimalist but expansive, it touches ascesis as well as pleasure, spirituality as well as a discreet form of sensuality.
